File this in the "For what it's worth" file.....onions!

this info came from an email from my mother in law....anyone ever heard this to be true?????

ONIONS

In 1919 when the flu killed 40  million people there was this Doctor that visited the many  farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.
Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and  many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise,  everyone was very healthy.  When the doctor asked what  the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied  that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms  of the home, (probably only two rooms back then).  The  doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of  the onions and place it under the microscope.  She gave  him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in  the onion.  It obviously absorbed the bacteria,  therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ.   She said that several years ago many of her employees were  coming down with the flu and so were many of her  customers. The next year she placed several bowls with  onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of  her staff got sick. It must work..  (And no, she  is not in the onion business..)

The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk,  place one or two in your office or under your desk or even  on top somewhere.  Try it and see what  happens.  We did it last year and we never  got the flu.

If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better.  If you do get the flu, it just might  be a mild case.. Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!!

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues.  She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder.. I don't know about the farmers story.. but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill.. I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar....placing the jar next to the sick patient at night.. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs.. sure enough it happened just like that.. the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS
I  have used an onion which has been left in the fridge, and sometimes I don't use a whole one at one time, so save the other half for later.

Now with this info, I have changed my mind.. will buy smaller onions in
 the future..

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of
mayonnaise..  Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the Mullins family.  My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I
 learned from a chemist.

The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula.  He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's.

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone
asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially- made Mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but
it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials
look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the
onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked
onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit,
that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)

Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'! ll
probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any
commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

So, how's that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am going to be very careful about my onions from now on. For some reason, I see a lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.'

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions .
Please remember it is dangerous to cut onions and try to use it to cook the next day ,it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates Toxic bacteria which may cause Adverse Stomach infections because of excess Bile secretions and even Food poisoning.
Please pass it on to all you love and care.

Celebrate!, a magazine review

Celebrate  by Hoffman Publications, a publication I've talked about before, is always a welcome find in my mailbox!  It is chockful of eye-candy for the person who loves to look at table-settings, recipes and all the accoutrements for celebrations!!!
I just opened my mailbox today and found my Celebrate Spring issue.....and what fun I had looking through it as it threatened to SNOW here in Texas.......we didn't get snow here where I live, but many places north of us did.  What a refreshment to look at these gorgeous spring pictures of various ideas for celebrating Spring!

I'll just share a sampler of what is included inside.  There are seasonal recipes and I thought this one looked perfect for a spring luncheon or tea....Strawberry chutney over Peppered Goat Cheese Spread....YUM.  Want me to share the recipe???  Then are strawberry muffins and strawberry pie.
These are some of the  holiday options they give for celebrating.....April Fool's Day, Easter, Cinco de Mayo, and Mother's Day.  They missed my birthday, but I won't hold them to it....I'll just email them ! :D
There is an idea for putting Chocolate Mousse in dyed Easter egg halves.  They also suggest some special occasions for celebrations, such as a Princess Party, a Domino Party, a Graduation celebration, a wedding on St. Simon's Island  and a baby shower.....CUTE ideas!
Toward the back of the book they give you helpful information to plan for your party......Centerpiece ideas, Table settings, graphics for invitations and a shower game, and even a color pallette to coordinate your party ideas. There is also a helpful party planner in the back of the magazine.
If you've not seen this publication, you can go to Hoffman Media and check out all their publications...they've got some fabulous ones!  It's a fun day to get a mailbox full of eye-candy!!!  Check it out!

My new best friend.....

I made a new purchase this past weekend........I bought a Shark.
Well, not the kind that swims, rather one that takes care of the dog hair it seems we were swimming IN.  Ever since my son brought Lucie (the mad dog) home, we are feeling like we are constantly fighting the dog hair takeover.  It gets EVERYWHERE.  We now own stock in lint rollers and refills from the sheer number of purchases of those items.  I need a volume discount. But let's not be whiners.....:D

So we were looking at vacuum cleaners, and I seriously considered forking over the money for a DYSON, the kingpin of animal hair removal devices!  After some investigation, my husband and I found this one and we decided it was worth a try.  Now, realize that I am not paid or anyway being rewarded by those people at Shark.  This is just a  good-hearted referral for a product I've found that does an excellent job. You will be amazed at the suction power of this machine!!!!  The Shark Automatic picked up so much dog hair and dirt, I was almost embarrassed.....and no, I am not going to show you the piles of hair vacuumed off of my rugs and carpet.  Suffice it to say, we should be breathing a whole lot easier today!  It costs about $175 at the local discount store......retail says about $200.  BEST money ever spent.  Now, we will see if it holds up it's end of the bargain over months of using it, but for now, I am sold......doesn't cost $500 AND does a good job.  I actually look forward to vacumming, to see how much dirt and dog hair I can conquer!!!  Well, almost.

Touching lives......

This is a post I ran last year about this time, and I was looking back in reflection, thought it was worth repeating.  It was a good reminder to me to look outside myself and see who I can touch today.  Perhaps it will inspire you as well, to touch the lives of others.
First of all let me just say that I am thrilled for my blog to be up and running again.....I missed being involved in the lives of those few of you who stop by to read whatever inspiration I might be attempting to convey to you. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to those of you who actually missed me....that warms my heart. I thought I'd share today a little bit about my most recent Ladies' Bible study. We've just finished a series entitled A Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George. We worked through the workbook and watched the DVD each week. Mostly we enjoyed sharing in each others lives. The last DVD lesson in particular brought out some terrific lessons that I wanted to share with you all. It was about touching the lives of others. Whether or not you have a Christian faith that drives you, you must agree that we benefit from connecting with others in our lives; we benefit from touching lives in a way that television cannot, that "how to books" cannot, that shopping or redecorating cannot.....we need positive human interaction! And in this last DVD lesson, Mrs. George discussed what is helpful to the ministry of a Christian woman. I thought I'd recap what she said.

1) Learn to work it out.....master your priorities. We only have a limited amount of time, and last time I checked it was only 24 hours per day. And some of those MUST be sleeping. She recognized the Proverbs 31 model for us all to use as a standard. We teach by message or by model....EVERYTHING we do or don't do teaches someone something. Honestly, that made me a little squirmy......something to think about. Also falling under this category is developing yourself. Don't avoid ministry/caring for someone else because you failed to take care of yourself or your own insecurity. Work on your weaknesses. If you feel you can't speak, take a class, or practice speaking. Every little practice helps. The more confident you feel, the more likely you are to touch a life...

2) Learn to reach out....learn the names of people and use them. We like to hear someone else call us by name. Plain and simple. You feel touched somehow if someone feels you are valuable enough to remember your name and use it. And let's face it, the more we use their names, the more we cement them in our brains and are more likely to remember them. Proverbs 11:24 encourages us to be a liberal giver and hold back nothing.

3) Learn to look out....go looking for those that are hurting. When you find one, be direct and intentional about helping. Write notes.....we just really  have to write three lines. That easy, but will be oh.so.meaningful. Make a phone call and simply say, "I thought of you, I prayed for you, and I just wanted to let you know."

In conclusion, give totally wherever you are. Wherever you are, BE ALL THERE. Live it to the hilt when you are there. We can all serve, we can all show mercy, we can all be giving. Go forth and be inspired! Just do it.

The Pantry make-over

If you will remember my initial post about the pantry, you will remember that I said it was one hot mess!!! Good thing it has a door on it, right?  All those cabinets to the left of the white door (the pantry), at one time held a hodge podge of dishes, coffee and tea fixings, mugs, bowls, etc.  But there were also dishes over to the other side of the kitchen as well.  It just was disorganized.  And my pantry was totally disorganized and way too full, especially since we only have three people in our household.  I've been used to cooking for five for so long, that I've got to learn to buy less, accumulate less, and also needed to get rid of excess stuff I'd held onto for far too long......um, hummm.........needed a do-over!  Please disregard the extra stuff on the countertop......I was working, not cleaning!    So I pulled everything out of my pantry, and everything out of the dish cabinets.....and began a major transformation that has turned out to be fantastic!  But it wasn't until today that I actually finished the project.....because I needed to replace the shelf covering...it was old contact paper that looked like this:

Old and dirty and out-dated, this needs a make-over , too!!!  So I picked up some more contact paper, after deciding that it would work the best.  The padded grid covering doesn't allow the dishes to slide in, which is what is helpful for me to put dishes away quickly.  Here's a picture of putting back together to put the food away.  My husband and I had taken a trip to WalMart to pick up tiered shelving for cans and white plastic baskets for holding chips, crackers and the like.
So today, I started putting the shelf paper in the pantry.......can you tell when I bought it, I was ready for spring and flowers??? No more drab skies for me!  I think it will look great in my pantry.

And now it's springy and organized and pretty!  The only dilemma is this next picture.  The picture below is the top shelf in the pantry.  It's nice because it holds all my tall things like the SLaHOME Savannah Beverage Server and my Astoria Carafe, and a few bottles of wine and liquor.  The PROBLEM with it is, that top shelf, which is not yet populated with said items, goes up about three feet!!!  Talk about wasted space!  It's difficult to even get anything up there (of course I have to use a stool anyway since I'm only 5'2".   The only solution I've been able to imagine is to get someone to frame out an open shelf above the pantry door, and use it as a display area........anyone else have any ideas???  If you go back to the top picture, you can imagine a framed- out indention where the wrought iron piece is above the door.  It might even be cool to have a fold down glass front.  What do you think could otherwise be done?  I hate to waste that space!!!
So this is the result of my pantry transformation.....maybe I'll link it up next Monday to Susan's party or Amanda's design dilemma next month.  Thanks for any ideas you have to offer.....sorry to have waited so darned long to post this!!

Don't we all have issues???

Some good, some not so good, and I'm away dealing with them......Celebrated my husband's birthday yesterday with carrot cake!  His favorite, but he left this morning, and it is sitting there....need to get it in the FREEZER!  Daughter is pretty sick, and I need to see if another doctor visit is called for once she wakes up.  I have a pain in the shoulder and need to get to the dr. to check on that.  In the meantime, I am trying to get the pantry all prettied up so that I can finally show y'all the renovated dish pantry.......well, that is in the works to show you later this week.  Have a great Wednesday, y'all. It is still chilly, but I am celebrating Mr. Sunshine who has graced us for the second full day! Yay~!

Monday again.........the weeks go by so fast, don't they???

Oh, but Monday for me usually means a special day to go see my little friends, the Howell quints!
It will be a time of playing, reading books, helping fix five little toddler lunches.....fun times.  I am honing my grammy skills for some day when I am actually a grammy!  What better practice, right?

Enjoy your Monday, whatever you are doing!!!!!!

Thursdays rambling thoughts....

Well, it was worth the effort to make the chocolate dipped fortune cookies w/ sprinkles that I showed you  here! They didn't take long at all, and they were very cute.  The girls came in for Allison's Bible Study group and just LOVED how they looked...and (might I add) TASTED.  I had also dipped in some shortbread cookies into the chocolate (both white and dark) and added sprinkles to those.  I also fixed some empanadas from the freezer and had a pot of chili......there were probably about 12 girls...and they enjoyed it all and cleaned it out and up!!! Loved that they enjoyed it!
It is cold and wet here today.......no snow for us in Houston, but just a miserable day to be out and about.  I have a couple of errands to run, but I will at least wait until this afternoon when it warms up a few degrees.  I am enjoying a slow morning with this and this.....and wondering what I will make for dinner tonight.....I'm thinking corn and ham chowder possibly or potato soup.

Lastly, I thought I'd leave you with a good recipe.........a Valentines Day chocolate recipe!

Strawberry Fudge Balls

1 (8 oz.) pkg cream cheese, softened
1 cup (6 oz.) semisweet chocolate morsels, melted
3/4 c. vanilla wafer crumbs
1/4 c. strawberry preserves
Coatings: 1 c. almonds, toasted and finely chopped OR powdered sugar OR unsweetened cocoa

Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add melted chocolate, beating until smooth. Stir in vanilla wafer crumbs and preserves; cover and chill for 1 hour. Shape mixture into 1 inch balls, and roll in almonds, powdered sugar or cocoa. Store in airtight container in refrigerator up to one week, or freeze up to 1 month.

Don't these sound scrumptious?????? Enjoy!!
